The Wilderness Act is a piece of legislation signed into law on Sept. 3, 1964. The central tenant of the law is as follows:
“A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.” In other words, there are places that remain "untrammeled" that are worth of a special designation to ensure that they remain so. 54 years later, there are 765 wilderness areas in the United States. 714 of those are located in the lower 48. Below, I examine some trends in the creation of wilderness areas, trying to test the hypothesis that the rate and size of wilderness area creation have remained constant through time (Ho). My analysis is limited to the lower-48.

AuthorI started learning how to program in High School. For a while now, I've been learning how to effectively use Matlab and R for data analysis and visualization. I will put the codes I've benchmarked and just interesting plots I make here. Archives
